FORMAT GUIDE
World Cup 2026 format explained
World Cup 2026 introduces a 48-team format. The teams are divided into 12 groups of four, with each team playing three group-stage matches. After the group stage, 32 teams advance to the knockout stage.
The competition contains 104 matches in total. The eventual champions will play eight matches: three in the group stage and five knockout matches from the Round of 32 through the final.

2nd in group

What happens after the group stage?
The knockout stage begins with the Round of 32. From that point, the tournament follows a single-elimination format: Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. A third-place match is also part of the final-stage schedule.
What makes the 2026 format different?
The biggest change is the extra knockout round. In previous 32-team editions, 16 teams reached the knockout stage. In 2026, 32 teams advance, so third-place rankings remain important until the final group matches are complete.
This format also means more simultaneous storylines: group winners fight for cleaner bracket paths, runners-up still qualify directly, and third-placed teams must compare results across all 12 groups.
