Why bracket slot labels appear before teams are known
Before the group stage ends, bracket slots are shown with labels such as "1A", "2B" or "best third-placed team". Those labels are useful because they show a team's possible path before the exact opponent is known. Once group standings are final, each slot can be replaced with the qualified team's name and flag.
When does the bracket become useful?
Before the final group matches, most Round of 32 positions are still projections. The bracket becomes most useful on the last group-stage match day, when qualified teams and possible best third-placed teams begin to lock in. After the group stage ends, the bracket shows confirmed teams, kick-off times and venues.
What happens if a knockout match is tied?
If a knockout match is level after normal time, it goes to extra time. If the score is still level after extra time, the winner is decided by a penalty shootout. The team that wins the tie advances to the next round.
