STANDINGS GUIDE
World Cup 2026 standings explained
World Cup 2026 has 12 groups of four teams. Each team plays the other three teams in its group once. A win is worth three points, a draw is worth one point and a defeat is worth zero points.
The top two teams in every group qualify for the Round of 32. The eight best third-placed teams also advance, which means third place remains important throughout the group stage.

World Cup 2026 group tie-breakers
If teams in the same group finish level on points, FIFA applies tie-breakers. For 2026, FIFA lists head-to-head criteria first, followed by overall group performance, disciplinary record and FIFA ranking if teams still cannot be separated.
- Points obtained in the matches between the tied teams.
- Goal difference in the matches between the tied teams.
- Goals scored in the matches between the tied teams.
- Goal difference in all group matches.
- Goals scored in all group matches.
- Team fair play score based on yellow and red cards.
- Latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Ranking if teams are still level.
How the best third-placed teams are ranked
The eight best third-placed teams are compared across all groups. FIFA uses points, goal difference, goals scored, team conduct score and then the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Ranking if needed.
This is why a third-place team cannot be judged only by its own group. A team on four points with a strong goal difference may be in a safer position than a team on three points, but the final ranking is not settled until every relevant group has finished.
What the qualification colors mean
On the AiScore World Cup page, the first two positions in each group are marked as direct qualification places. Third place is marked separately because only eight of the 12 third-placed teams advance. During the group stage, that third-place status can change quickly after each goal or final whistle.
